At Addicted Ink, we want your tattoo experience to be as smooth, comfortable, and pain-free as possible. A great tattoo starts before you even sit in our chair. Here is how you can prepare your body and mind for your upcoming session:
1. Protect Your Skin (Crucial!)
No Sunburns: We absolutely cannot tattoo over sunburnt, peeling, or damaged skin. Please use a high-SPF sunscreen and keep the placement area covered when spending time outdoors in the days leading up to your appointment.
Skip the Fake Tan: Avoid applying self-tanners or getting spray tans on the area being tattooed, as this can affect how the ink colors appear in your skin.
2. Hydrate and Moisturize
Drink Water: Start drinking plenty of water the day before. Well-hydrated skin is more elastic, takes ink much better, and heals faster.
Lotion Up: Gently moisturize the area for a few days prior to your session, but do not apply any heavy lotions or oils on the actual day of your appointment.
3. Fuel Your Body
Eat a Solid Meal: Never get tattooed on an empty stomach. Eating a hearty, balanced meal 1 to 2 hours beforehand keeps your blood sugar stable, minimizing pain and preventing dizziness.
Bring Snacks: For longer sessions, feel free to bring sugary snacks, a soda, or juice to keep your energy levels up.
4. Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners
No Alcohol for 24 Hours: We know you might be on holiday, but please avoid drinking alcohol the night before your session. Alcohol thins your blood, which causes excessive bleeding. This makes it harder for the artist to work and can literally push the ink out of your skin, leading to a patchy tattoo.
Limit Caffeine and Painkillers: High amounts of caffeine or over-the-counter blood thinners (like Ibuprofen or Aspirin) can have a similar effect.
5. Dress Comfortably
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows the artist easy access to the area being tattooed.
Keep in mind that tattoo ink can stain, so we recommend wearing darker colors that you don't mind potentially getting a little ink or ointment on.
6. Rest Up
Get a full night's sleep before your session. Being well-rested keeps your immune system strong and makes it significantly easier for your body to handle the physical stress of getting tattooed.
A beautiful tattoo is a team effort; we provide the expert application, but proper healing is up to you. Treat your fresh tattoo like an open wound. Follow these steps strictly to ensure your new ink heals perfectly and stays vibrant for years to come.
1. The Initial Wrap
Standard Cling Film: Leave the protective wrap on for 2 to 4 hours after leaving the studio.
Second Skin (e.g., Dermalize/Saniderm): If your artist applied a breathable adhesive film, leave it on for 3 to 5 days as directed. A buildup of ink and plasma underneath the film is completely normal.
2. The Wash
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your fresh tattoo.
Gently wash the area using lukewarm water and a mild, unscented antibacterial soap. Use your fingers—do not use washcloths, loofahs, or sponges.
Gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel (avoid standard fabric bath towels as they can harbor bacteria and lint). Let it air dry for an additional 10 minutes.
3. Moisturizing
Once completely dry, apply a very thin, breathable layer of tattoo aftercare ointment or unscented lotion.
Do not over-moisturize. Your tattoo needs to breathe to heal. Apply a very thin layer 2 to 3 times a day, or whenever the skin feels tight and dry.
4. Crucial Things to Avoid (The "Don'ts")
No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid the ocean, swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths for at least 2 to 3 weeks to prevent severe bacterial infections. Stick to quick showers.
No Direct Sunlight: Keep your healing tattoo shielded from direct sun exposure. Once it is completely healed, always apply a high-SPF sunscreen to keep the ink from fading.
No Picking or Scratching: As your tattoo heals, it will flake and peel like a sunburn. It will also get itchy. Never scratch or pick at the scabs. Let the dead skin fall off naturally to avoid pulling out the ink and causing patchiness.
